The variety of plants and flowers

The gardener will find out sooner rather than later that the garden is not only a display of beautiful flowers, it is also a hub where food is grown and distributed freely to a large variety of insects. This year, again, we have seen how the Monarch butterflies particularly love Zinnias. Unfortunately some insects will also cause an extensive amount of damage. The garden is definitely an ecosystem where its tender will witness the drama of life unfold under her eyes.

The gardener is a poet whose parchment is a well prepared soil.

Flora The building blocks of the garden

Daffodils, Oriental Poppies, Foxgloves, Columbines, Irises, Lilies, Roses, Echinaceas, Gazanias, Dahlias, Hibiscus, to name a few, year after year, transform a monocolor landscape into a palette for Nature to express its colorful bounty.

Reflection on a season of gardening

The 2016 gardening season will soon come to an end. Fall has arrived but the garden is still producing a second crop of healthy looking flowers. In a not too distant future the garden will be covered with snow, gestating for the grand opening next spring when galore of daffodils will display their electric yellows to brighten the garden anew. Our region is still suffering from an extreme drought condition which made watering the garden almost daily an imperative for the first time ever. Every year beside planting a plethora of annuals, tending the long standing perennials, a new commitment has been made to reduce the amount of work this large garden requires. Planting shrubs, low maintenance ground cover to reduce weeding, has been considered. This year again great joy was experienced while savoring the gifts of Nature obtained by putting long but pleasurable hours of hard work.

The joy of gardening

Each year the garden shows a different face. Despite the gardener's urge of being in control nature will have a say in the way the garden looks like. A wise gardener will take this into consideration.

Jacqueline Gardener

The great therapeutic facet of gardening is not to be underestimated.

Fauna The residents

The garden is an environment made in Heaven for the local fauna. Skunk, squirrels, chipmunks, snakes, frogs, wild turkeys, birds of all kind, insects are all benefiting from such a rich enclave. Their eagerness to make the most of it will, at time, conflicts with the gardener's intent: Young shoots of sunflowers were eaten with great delight by some creature with no regard for the gardener's sense of planning.

Planning for next year

During the winter months, cosily nestled near the fireplace the gardener will indulge in preparing for the next gardening season. Time to drool over the marvelous pictures of flowers seen in seed catalogs.
